A lot going on @ Hobart Deli, North Perth, W.A.
At first, I was a bit sceptical. The Tonka trucks and the screaming kids made me so. It’s not that I don’t like children; it’s the acoustics of the venue that seems to amplify the sound. Maybe I wouldn’t have heard it as briskly as I did Wednesday morning if I’d had my morning coffee and was a bit more receptive to things around me. Nevertheless, Hobart Deli was definitely a pleasant surprise.
When A and I entered, we both mentioned how busy this little café was. There was a line of people ordering at the counter that seemed to be never ending. The guy behind the counter seemed a bit flustered by this but overall the wait-staff seemed to manage. It seems Hobart Deli is a very popular venue on weekdays – I couldn’t imagine it on the weekend!
The venue is really quaint. It’s set in suburbia with a fenced park across the road. The café itself is an eclectic mix of things and there is a lot going on inside. There is a lovely display of baked goods at the counter, a fridge full of homemade goodies such as ice-cream and soup. There is also a rack of quirky gifts and a card stand for you to buy from and an extensive menu for you to order from. My favourite little spot was close to the huge rack of food magazines that were on offer for you to read while you ate. I loved the overhanging lights, which were little glass milk bottles with tiny, little lights in them. I also loved the old door at the front, which gave it a bit of character from the old deli beforehand.
The breakfast menu has a lot to offer, however I found myself a little bit disappointed that they didn’t just have eggs and bacon with toast. Instead, you can get eggs with a side of bacon – costing you $17.00, as the sides are $4.50 each. So, I opted for the breakfast wrap ($15.90), which came with fried eggs, bacon, fried tomatoes, pecorino, and greens. A ended up getting a pineapple and ginger muffin. Both were really nice. The muffin was moist and the flavour of the ginger and pineapple was not too overbearing. My breakfast wrap was crispy on the outside and tasty in the middle – just what you want in a breakfast wrap.
My main gripe was that the coffee took a bit long, as it came to the table after our food. However, the taste of the coffee definitely made up for the wait. They use crema beans and the barista certainly knew what she was doing.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with this café and will return soon.
